Chapter Five

When they stepped offstage, Bruce was waiting for them, looking tall and professional in a dark blue suit and tie. “No sign of Ewan,” he said, and rolled his shoulders. “We’re going have to hire more people. My shoulder blades are itching.”

“Yeah, so are mine,” Nate said grimly. He’d forgotten how God-awful those photos were. What Ewan had done to her had sent his anger leaping dangerously high. And the fact that the bastard was now trying to scuttle her career only added to his fury.

He forced himself to breathe in and out slowly, fighting to regain control. Anger that hot could make you stupid.

A production assistant showed them to the rear exit the station used when someone needed to leave out the back, and they all started toward the limo.

“I guess that precious career of yours is toast now,” a nasty voice mocked. “Told you you’d regret what you did to me, bitch.” Ewan laughed, the sound snide.

Nate whirled as the stalker spun and darted away. “Get them out of here!” he snapped at Bruce and shot down the alley after him.

It was past time the bastard found out what it felt like to be on the receiving end of a beating.

“Go after them!” Raven yelled at Bruce. “Nate needs backup!”

“No.” The big man braced a hand on her and Kara’s shoulders and urged them toward the car. “My responsibility is to get you to safety. Nate can handle that asshole.”

“But anything could happen! What if Ewan’s got a gun? What if…” Raven could tell from the stony look on his face that Bruce wasn’t going to listen.

Unless she made him. It was wrong, and she knew it, but she didn’t give a shit. All she could think about was Nate up against Ewan. Alone.

Nate was bigger and stronger, but against a Bard with as much power as Ewan, that didn’t mean much. Ewan might not be the greatest singer, but he could make you believe the sky was green plaid when he wanted to.

Or that you deserved the broken ribs he’d just given you with a kick in the side.

Raven met Bruce’s eyes. “Go after them!” she snarled, pumping power into her voice. “Nate needs you. And if you don’t get to him, he could die!”

Bruce’s eyes widened and went unfocused. Without another word, he sprinted in the direction the other two had gone.

Kara stared after him, her jaw dropping. “Raven! He’s going to quit! You just violated his contract!”

“He can sue the shit out of me as long as he helps Nate,” Raven said flatly. “Get in the car. We’re going after them.” Whether they’d be able to track them in rush hour traffic was another question.

The little bastard was fast, Nate would give him that, his gaze focused on Ewan’s fleeing back. The Bard had changed out of the emerald suit, and now he was dressed in black jeans and a tee, along with black Air Jordans a lot more suited to running than Nate’s hard dress shoes.
